What Is Abortion?

Abortion is a procedure to terminate a pregnancy. It uses medicine or surgery to remove the embryo or foetus and placenta from the uterus of the mother.

Often people mistake abortion with miscarriage. A miscarriage is a condition where the foetus or the embryo has died within the mother’s womb.

Earlier in India and in many countries, abortions were performed on the basis of the gender of the baby. But it is illegal now in today’s world.

Abortions performed for rightful reasons and under legal circumstances are no crime.

Around 10 million and counting women in India have undergone abortion secretly. It is the duty of the family and society to normalise abortion and to stop assuming that it is done for any bad reasons.

When It Is Performed

Abortions are performed under many circumstances which include:

Miscarriages caused due to:
  1. Infections.
  2. Exposure to toxic substances: exposure to toxic substances in the working environment like high levels of radiation or any toxic agents.
  3. Uterine abnormalities.
  4. Improper implantation of the fertilized egg.
  5. Maternal age.
  6. Incompetent uterus: there are cases when the uterus is unable to hold the foetus. It can happen due to many factors. The most common among them is maternal age.
  7. Incompetent cervix: the cervix starts to widen and opens up in the midway of pregnancy.
  8. Controlled diseases: uncontrolled diabetes, heart diseases, kidney problems, thyroids, auto-immune diseases, etc.
  9. Improper lifestyle: a lifestyle that includes excessive smoking, consumption of alcohol on a daily basis, exposure to high radiations, etc.
  10.  Medicines: intake of certain medicines like the drug isotretinoin. (note: it is advisable to contact a doctor before trying out the medications).
  11. In most cases, the patient can have improvement from the disorders if they undergo proper treatments.

Choice Of The Woman:

Sometimes abortion is performed on the call of the mother. It can be due to many personal factors like:

  1. The woman and her family are not yet ready to have a baby.
  2. In case of rape
  3. Financial instability.

Treatment Options Prescribed By The Doctor May Include

The types of abortion performed by a doctor depends on the stage of pregnancy:
  1. Medical abortion: medical abortion can be effective in the initial phases of pregnancy. Oral pills like Mifeprex and Cytotec are given to the patient that block certain hormones and stop the growth of the embryo or foetus. The patient has to visit the doctor for a regular period of time to assess their drug administration. (note: it should be done under the supervision of any professional)
  2. Suction abortion: suction abortion is also known as vacuum aspiration and it is performed in the first 12-13 weeks of pregnancy. Anesthetics are injected into the cervix. A small tube is inserted into a handheld syringe or suction machine then into the uterus. After that, the contents are cleared out.
  4. Second trimester: dilation and evacuation: if a woman is pregnant for more than 12 weeks then this procedure is adopted. The cervix is dilated with the help of certain tools and medications; the vagina is softened using oral medicines like misoprostol. the inner lining of the uterus is scraped. Ultrasound and suction can be used to make sure that everything is cleared.
  5. Late-term abortion: dilation and extraction: all the steps and procedures are the same as dilation and evacuation of the second trimester. It is often performed due to the degrading medical condition of the mother.
