A gall bladder is a small, pear-shaped organ located on the right side of the abdomen, just beneath the liver. Gall bladder cancer is the abnormal growth of cancerous cells in the gall bladder.

What Are The Causes And Symptoms Of Gall Bladder Cancer?

Causes

The specific cause for the cancerous development in the gall bladder is unknown.

It occurs when the healthy cells of the gall bladder undergo mutations. Due to mutation, abnormal growth of cancerous cells takes place. The uncontrolled growth results in the development of a lump called a cancerous tumour.

In certain cases, the cancerous cells can spread to the entire body.

In most cases, gall bladder cancers begin in the glandular cells, which lines the inner lining of the gall bladder.

Symptoms

  1. Abdominal pain
  2. Fever
  3. Loss of appetite
  4. Constipation and digestive problems
  5. Bloating
  6. Weight loss.

What Are The Risk Factors That Can Lead To Gall Bladder Cancer?

The risk factors that can increase the possibility of gall bladder cancer are

  1. Gender: gall bladder cancer is more common in women than in men.
  2. Age: the risk of gall bladder cancer increases with age.
  3. History of gallstones: patients who have previously suffered from gallstone (presence of stone in the gall bladder) problems, have a greater risk of gall bladder cancer.
  4. Presence of any gall bladder diseases: any underlying disease of the gall bladder can promote cancerous activity.
  5. Inflammation of the bile ducts: Primary sclerosing cholangitis, causes inflammation of the bile ducts. Patients with this condition have a higher risk of acquiring gall bladder cancer.

How To Diagnose The Condition?

The condition is diagnosed with the help of the following tests:

  1. Blood tests.
  2. Ultrasounds and imaging tests and like computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Tests which are performed to determine the extent and stage of the cancerous activity:

  1. Exploratory surgery: it is done with the procedure of laparoscopy. A tube-like structure with a tiny camera at the end is inserted in the affected region. The condition of the organ is then examined on the monitor.
  2. Examination of the bile ducts which includes magnetic resonance cholangiography and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
  3. Additional localized imaging tests in the chest and abdomen region.

What Are The Treatment Options?

The treatment and objective depend on the stage and extent of cancer. Different individuals require different treatments depending on factors like age, underlying disease, the extent of cancer and the stage of cancer.

Treatment Options For Early-Stage Of Cancer:

  1. Cholecystectomy: surgery to remove the gall bladder.
  2. Removal of the affected region of the gall bladder and a small region of the liver: this procedure is performed for the gall bladder cancer that has spread to a small region of the liver.

Treatment Options For Later Stages Of Cancer:

    1. Chemotherapy: it uses drugs to remove the cancerous cells. A few sessions of chemotherapy treatment is required to destroy the cancerous cells.
    2. Radiation therapy
    3. Targeted drug therapy
    4. Immunotherapy
