Joint Pain: Causes & Treatment

Joint pain is very prevalent, especially as people get older. The most widespread complaint is knee pain, which is followed by shoulder and hip pain. Joint pain, on the other hand, can strike anywhere on your body, from your ankles and feet to your shoulders and hands.

What Is Joint Pain?

What Causes Joint Pains?

A variety of conditions can cause aching joints, including:

  • The most prevalent type of arthritis is osteoarthritis, which is a “wear and tear” condition.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of autoimmune disease in which the body attacks its own tissues.
  • Bursitis occurs when the fluid sacs that cushion your joints become inflamed.
  • Gout is an arthritic condition that most commonly affects the big toe joint.
  • Strains, sprains, and other types of injuries are common.

Other causes:

Joint pain can also be brought about by:

  • lupus
  • certain infectious diseases, such as mumps, influenza, and hepatitis
  • chondromalacia of the patella, or a breakdown of the cartilage in the kneecap
  • tendinitis, or infection of the tendon contamination of the bone or joint
  • overuse of a joint
  • cancer
  • fibromyalgia
  • osteoporosis
  • sarcoidosis
  • Rickets

Medical Treatment

The type of treatment one will receive will be determined by the reason for their discomfort. The doctor may need to pull out collected fluid in the joint area to rule out infection, gout, or other causes of joint discomfort. They may also prescribe joint replacement surgery.
Other nonsurgical treatment options include making lifestyle changes or using drugs that may help your Rheumatoid Arthritis go into remission. The doctor will first address inflammation in the case of Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Once the Rheumatoid Arthritis has gone into remission, all medical care will focus on maintaining a close eye on the disease to prevent flare-ups.

Physical Therapy For Joint Pain

Physical therapy for joint pain focuses on the following areas:

  • Keeping (or regaining) joint function and range of motion.
  • Muscles surrounding the joint should be strengthened.
  • Keeping joint stiffness and pain to a minimum

The physical therapist may advise the patient to use a walking aid, brace, or splint depending on your condition.

A supervised physical exercise program is especially important for fibromyalgia patients. It can help with symptoms such as muscle and joint pain, fatigue, and anxiety.

Treatment At Home

Both Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis are considered chronic illnesses by doctors. There is presently no medication that may totally cure or prevent joint discomfort caused by arthritis. There are, however, methods for coping with the discomfort:

  • Medication: To minimize pain, swelling, and inflammation, the patient can use topical pain medications or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines at home as and when prescribed by their doctor. They may use non-prescription over the counter medication as well.

  • Heat and Cold redress: This can consist of taking a long hot bath, using an electric powered blanket, moist heating pad, gel ice pack or a bag of frozen veggies in a towel  to minimize soreness and decrease stiffness.
